On coloured wove paper with CANSON & MONTGOLFIER watermark, fresh in colours and in immaculate condition

Comments

A bold circus scene, with figures composed on a burgundy coloured paper. Metamorphosis seems to be the main theme linking the illuminated circus figures, the clown with the fiery-red animal head, the white acrobat who connects to a large profile head ochre with splendid, blooming hair, and finally the young, blue faced artist at lower centre. Various patches of related colours serve to unite the composition. On the left the musician and the awestruck crowd surrounding the ring are visible. Once again, Chagall represents the circus as a metaphor for life. And the viewer becomes part of this wonderfully vibrant composition

Erläuterungen

Eine kühne Zirkusszene, die Figuren auf ein bordeaux-rotes Papier komponiert. Die "Metamorphose" wird zum Leitfaden für die beleuchteten Zirkusakteure, dem Clown mit rotem, feurigem Tierkopf, der Akrobatin in Weiss als Bindeglied, einem grossen Profil in Ocker mit blühender Haarpracht und schliesslich dem jungen Künstler mit blauem Gesicht in der unteren Mitte. Ein feiner Farbhauch scheint sie zu einem Ganzen zu verbinden. Links finden sich Clown und Musikant und die staunende Menge um die Manege. Einmal mehr gelingt es Chagall, den Zirkus als Metapher des "Lebens" einzufangen, und dank der Einbeziehung des farbigen Hintergrundes ein eigenes Weltbild zu entwerfen. Die Betrachtenden werden Teil der Szenerie, eine wunderbar farbenprächtige Komposition
