Lucy Hessel was the wife of the art dealer Jos (Joseph) Hessel, who had Édouard Vuillard under exclusive contract. Lucy quickly became the artist's muse. A passionate love affair developed, which apparently did not bother her cuckolded husband very much. In 1908, Vuillard finally settled with his mother in the Place Vintimille in Paris. There he created numerous interior views of the flat and views of the square. The present work was probably created there

Lucy Hessel war Gattin des Kunsthändlers Jos (Joseph) Hessel, der Édouard Vuillard exklusiv unter Vertrag hatte. Schnell wurde Lucy zur Muse des Künstlers. Eine leidenschaftliche Liebesbeziehung entbrannte, die den gehörnten Gatten anscheinend nicht sonderlich störte. 1908 liess sich Vuillard mit seiner Mutter endgültig an der Place Vintimille in Paris nieder. Dort schuf er zahlreiche Innenansichten des Appartements und Aussichten auf den Platz. Das vorliegende Werk dürfte dort entstanden sein
