Commentaires

Augusto Giacometti's late work is characterised in particular by large-format landscapes of the Bergell. The painting with a view from the shepherd's house towards the west, depicts the houses of the lower part of the village of Stampa on a bright summer day. The double building with the brown barn door is Augusto's parents' house. The tall building on the far left of the picture is the Pontisella house, the cropped house on the right is the Ciäsa Granda. The work was created in the summer of 1943. In the biography of Augusto Giacometti by Marco Giacometti, which will be published next year, we learn that Augusto came to Bergell on 5 August 1943. We also read that he wrote the following lines in a letter to the writer Carl Seelig on 16 September 1943: "(...) Yes, I was in Stampa. The simplicity and the silence there were wonderful. I now often think back to that beautiful time."

Erläuterungen

Das Spätwerk Augusto Giacomettis zeichnet sich speziell durch grossformatige Landschaften des Bergells aus. Das Gemälde mit Blick vom Hirtenhaus Richtung Westen, stellt die Häuser des unteren Dorfteils von Stampa an einem strahlenden Sommertag dar. Das Doppelgebäude mit dem braunen Scheunentor ist Augustos Elternhaus. Das hohe Gebäude ganz links im Bild ist das Haus Pontisella, das angeschnittene Haus rechts ist die Ciäsa Granda. Das Werk ist im Sommer 1943 entstanden. In der Biographie Augusto Giacomettis von Marco Giacometti, welche nächstes Jahr erscheinen wird, ist zu erfahren, dass Augusto am 5. August 1943 ins Bergell kam. Weiter liest man, dass er in einem Brief an den Schriftsteller Carl Seelig am 16. September 1943 die folgenden Zeilen schrieb: "(...) Ja, ich war in Stampa. Die Einfachheit und die Stille dort waren wunderbar. Ich denke nun oft an die schöne Zeit zurück."
