Born in New York in 1922, Theodoros Stamos came from a Greek immigrant family. In 1936 he began studying art at Peter Stuyvesant High School in New York, but dropped out prematurely. He continued to develop as an autodidact and exhibited for the first time in 1943 at the Wakefield Gallery run by Betty Parsons. As one of the most important representatives of Abstract Expressionism, he later became an esteemed teacher, for example at the famous Black Mountain College in North Carolina
Stamos' non-objective paintings primarily explore colour in abstraction. Different colours are "blurred" next to each other, it is about light, atmosphere and composition. He is also considered one of the forerunners of colour field painting
From 1962 he worked on the so-called "Sun-Boxes", clear rectangles painted at different positions on the canvas. The painting offered here was created shortly before this series, but already shows the idea of complementary colours. Here, however, the colours are set much more freely and thus create a connection to the works of the 1940s. This phase in the oeuvre is considered one of the best ever. The contrast of red on the almost complementary green ground is excitingly heightened with a kind of dark shadow. The glazed and freely applied colour makes the picture a lively fluidity, an atmospheric sky picture

Erläuterungen

Der 1922 in New York geborene Theodoros Stamos stammt aus einer griechischen Einwandererfamilie. 1936 beginnt er ein Kunststudium an der Peter Stuyvesant Highschool in New York, das er aber vorzeitig abbricht. Er entwickelt sich als Autodidakt weiter und stellt 1943 erstmals in der von Betty Parsons geleiteten Wakefield Gallery aus. Als einer der wichtigen Vertreter des Abstrakten Expressionismus ist er später ein geschätzter Lehrer, etwa auch am berühmten Black Mountain College in North Carolina
Die gegenstandslosen Gemälde von Stamos loten vor allem die Farbe in der Abstraktion aus. Verschiedene Farben werden "unscharf" nebeneinander abgegrenzt, es geht um Licht, Atmosphäre und Komposition. Er gilt auch als einer der Vorläufer der Farbfeld-Malerei
Ab 1962 arbeitet er an den sogenannten "Sun-Boxes", klaren Rechtecken die an unterschiedlichen Positionen auf die Leinwand gemalt werden. Das hier angebotene Gemälde ist kurz vor dieser Serie entstanden, zeigt aber schon die Idee der sich ergänzenden Farben. Hier sind die Farben aber viel freier gesetzt und schaffen damit die Verbindung zu den Arbeiten der 1940er Jahre. Diese Phase im Œuvre gilt als eine der besten überhaupt. Der Kontrast von Rot auf dem fast komplementären grünen Grund wird spannend mit einer Art dunklem Schatten erhöht. Die lasierend und frei aufgetragene Farbe macht das Bild zu einem lebendigen Fluidum, zu einem atmosphärischen Himmelsbild
