Comments

The work is dated by the Fondation Félix Vallotton as early as 1895 and not 1897 as Vallotton noted on the painting. It is assumed that Vallotton did not sign the painting until 1923 for the exhibition at the Galerie Druet and that after such a long time he mistakenly dated it 1897. In the Livre de raison, moreover, no work with a suitable title can be assigned to the present painting in 1897, but there are various untitled works there which are dated 1895. This assumption is confirmed by a comparison of the compositions of works with the theme of shop window views from 1897, which differ greatly from our picture composition. Further confirmation of an earlier dating is given by the woodcut "L'averse" from 1895, in which a small boy wearing a little hat is depicted in the lower left-hand corner of the woodcut, similar to the one in the present work. The charming small-format oil painting shows the modern electric, brightly lit shop window of a hat shop on the right-hand edge of the picture, while a passing woman with a boy by the hand briefly looks at the display. The artificial light of the shop window reveals only the dark silhouette of the woman. On the left in the background a woman in a green jacket and a gentleman in a top hat are visible

Erläuterungen

Das Werk wird von der Fondation Félix Vallotton schon um 1895 datiert und nicht 1897 wie von Vallotton auf dem Bild vermerkt. Es wird vermutet, dass Vallotton das Gemälde erst 1923 für die Ausstellung in der Galerie Druet signierte und er dies nach so langer Zeit fälschlicherweise ins Jahr 1897 datierte. Im Livre de raison kann ausserdem 1897 kein Werk mit einem passenden Titel dem vorliegenden Bild zugeordnet werden, dafür finden sich dort verschiedene unbetitelte Werke, welche ins Jahr 1895 datiert werden. Diese Annahme bekräftig sich im Vergleich der Kompositionen von Werken mit dem Thema von Schaufensteransichten aus dem Jahr 1897, welche sich stark von unserer Bildkomposition unterscheiden. Eine weitere Bestätigung auf eine frühere Datierung gibt der Holzschnitt "L'averse" von 1895, auf welchem ein kleiner Junge mit Hütchen unten links im Holzschnitt dargestellt ist, ähnlich dem auf dem vorliegenden Werk. Das reizvolle kleinformatige Ölbild zeigt am rechten Bildrand das modern elektrisch, hell erleuchtete Schaufenster eines Hutladens, während eine vorbeigehende Frau mit einem Jungen an der Hand kurz die Auslage betrachtet. Das künstliche Licht des Schaufensters lässt von der Frau nur gerade die dunkle Silhouette erkennen. Links im Bildhintergrund sind eine Frau mit grüner Jacke und ein Herr mit Zylinder ersichtlich
