The watercolour is in very good condition, fresh in colours. Small pinholes in the four corners and single small tears of a few millimetres in the outermost margin. Minimal light margin, ca. 4 to 5 mm within the edge of the sheet. Small loss at extreme upper right corner. Isolated old waterstains. On cream handmade paper, with the ornamental knot "S A V" (Société Anonyme des papeteries de Vidalon) as watermark
Cezanne's concern not to "copy" an object or a landscape, but to artistically reproduce, to "realise", the "sensation optique", i.e. the sensation of contemplation, can be seen perfectly in the watercolour offered here. He used the medium of watercolour to experiment with composition, creating a variety of effects with transparent colours and finely placed pencil strokes. The recesses in the application of paint and the incomparable luminosity of the watercolour medium allowed him to give special meaning to light and the interplay of form and spatiality. The watercolours thus also had a great influence on the oil paintings. The watercolour offered here impressively shows Cezanne's incomparable artistry in its reduction. It has been in the family since 1950 and is now on sale again for the first time. Large-format watercolours that are so beautifully preserved are rarely found today

Das Aquarell ist in sehr schöner farbfrischer Erhaltung. In den vier Ecken kleine Nadellöcher und im äussersten Rand einzelne kleine Einrisse von einigen Millimetern. Minimaler Lichtrand, ca. 4 bis 5 mm innerhalb der Blattkante. Äusserste obere Ecke rechts kleine Fehlstelle. Vereinzelte alte Wasserfleckchen. Auf cremefarbenen Bütten, mit dem Ornamentknoten "S A V" (Société Anonyme des papeteries de Vidalon) als Wasserzeichen
Cezannes Anliegen, nicht einen Gegenstand oder eine Landschaft zu "kopieren", sondern die "sensation optique", also die Empfindung der Betrachtung, künstlerisch wiederzugeben, zu "realisieren", lässt sich im hier angebotenen Aquarell trefflich ablesen. Er nutzte das Medium Aquarell, um mit der Komposition zu experimentieren und dabei mit transparenten Farben und fein gesetzten Bleistiftstrichen eine Vielzahl von Effekten zu erzeugen. Die Aussparungen im Farbauftrag und die unvergleichliche Leuchtkraft des Mediums Aquarell erlaubten es ihm, dem Licht und dem Wechselspiel von Form und Räumlichkeit eine besondere Bedeutung zu geben. Die Aquarelle hatten damit auch einen grossen Einfluss auf die Ölgemälde. Das hier angebotene Aquarell zeigt in seiner Reduktion eindrücklich Cezannes unvergleichliche Kunstfertigkeit. Seit 1950 in Familienbesitz kommt es nun erstmals wieder in den Handel. Grossformatige und so schön erhaltene Aquarelle sind heute nur noch selten zu finden
