Condition

Excellent condition. The painting was examined in 2017 by the Sam Francis Foundation in Pasadena and professionally cleaned by Aneta Zebala. Pigment analyses were carried out and the results became part of the publication by the Getty Conservation Institute

Comments

In early January 1960, Sam Francis travelled to Europe to look for a flat in Paris for his newlywed wife Teruko Yokoi and their joint newborn daughter Kayo. In Arceuil, a suburb in the south of the metropolis, he still had the studio he had moved into in 1956. In the spring, between various short stays in Bern, he worked there on paintings, some of which he began and some of which he completed. Francis, by now used to travelling, had found that he could easily start a painting in one studio and send it to another for completion. In Bern, preparations for the big art exhibition at the Kunsthalle at the end of May were in full swing, and Eberhard W. Kornfeld set up a studio for him accordingly
During this time, "Blue 3" was completed and could be seen in the Kunsthalle Bern in addition to the catalogue. Various archive photos bear witness to the work on the series of "Blue Balls Paintings" in Arceuil's studio. The floor of the studio is covered with sketches on paper showing different compositions of floating, lively, spherical forms; on the walls are canvases in various stages of completion. As if driven by centrifugal force, the forms seem to be pushed outwards to the edge of the picture. Burchett-Lere sees in these works a "spiritual, obsessive aspect that encourages the viewer to transpose the picture plane into another work" (Burchett-Lere/Zebala, pag. 55)

Exzellenter Zustand. Das Gemälde wurde 2017 von der Sam Francis Foundation in Pasadena untersucht und von Aneta Zebala professionell gereinigt. Es erfolgten Pigmentanalysen und die Ergebnisse wurden Teil der Publikation vom Getty Conservation Institute

Erläuterungen

Anfang Januar 1960 reiste Sam Francis nach Europa, um nach einer Wohnung in Paris für seine frischvermählte Frau Teruko Yokoi und ihre gemeinsame neugeborene Tochter Kayo zu suchen. In Arceuil, einem Vorort im Süden der Metropole, hatte er noch immer sein 1956 bezogenes Studio. Im Frühjahr arbeitete er dort zwischen verschiedenen Kurzaufenthalten in Bern an Gemälden, die er teils anfing und teils vollendete. Francis, inzwischen an das Reisen gewöhnt, hatte festgestellt, dass er ein Gemälde problemlos in einem Atelier beginnen und zur Fertigstellung in ein anderes Atelier schicken konnte. In Bern liefen die Vorbereitungen für die grosse Kunstausstellung Ende Mai in der Kunsthalle auf Hochtouren, und Eberhard W. Kornfeld richtete ihm dementsprechend auch ein Atelier ein
In dieser Zeit wurde "Blue 3" vollendet, war es doch ausser Katalog in der Kunsthalle Bern zu sehen. Verschiedene Archivfotos zeugen von der Arbeit an der Reihe der "Blue Balls Paintings" im Studio von Arceuil. Der Boden vom Atelier ist mit Skizzen auf Papier bedeckt, die unterschiedliche Kompositionen aus schwebenden, lebendigen, kugelförmigen Formen zeigen, an den Wänden stehen Leinwände in unterschiedlichen Fertigstellungsstadien. Wie von der Zentrifugalkraft getrieben scheinen die Formen nach aussen an den Bildrand gedrängt zu werden. Burchett-Lere sieht in diesen Arbeiten einen "spirituellen, obsessiven Aspekt, der den Betrachter dazu anregt, die Bildebene in ein anderes Werk zu versetzen" (Burchett-Lere/Zebala, pag. 55)
