Flowers play a leading role in Chagall's oeuvre. The bouquet of flowers stands as an ephemeral source of inspiration that makes the boundary between the exterior and the interior fluid and even dissolves it, as in the present painting: on a table with a fruit bowl stands a vase from which a lush bouquet rises up into the air and takes up the entire pictorial space. The flowers become an incomparable firework and shine against the blue ground. Almost like a drawing, the artist has indicated with his brush the well-known houses of his Belorussian hometown of Vitebsk on the horizon; on the left is a lovers' embrace. It is a reminiscence of earlier times; at the top the "sun-moon" shines, leaving it open whether the day is dawning or the night, and at the bottom right the mystical animal can be seen, which, like the flowers, also stands for inspiration. Rarely do the flowers dominate a painting as in this case. Despite the dominance of the bouquet, Chagall hides many small quotations from his life story

Erläuterungen

Blumen nehmen im Œuvre von Chagall eine Hauptrolle ein. Das Blumenbouquet steht als ephemere Inspirationsquelle, das die Grenze vom Aussen- zum Innenraum fliessend macht und sogar aufhebt, so auch im vorliegenden Gemälde: Auf einem Tisch mit Früchteschale steht eine Vase, aus welcher ein üppiger Strauss in die Höhe ragt und den ganzen Bildraum einnimmt. Die Blumen werden zu einem unvergleichlichen Feuerwerk und leuchten vor dem blauen Grund. Beinahe zeichnerisch hat der Künstler mit dem Pinsel die bekannten Häuser seiner weissrussischen Heimatstadt Witebsk am Horizont angedeutet, links ist ein innig umschlungenes Liebespaar zu sehen. Es ist eine Reminiszenz an frühere Zeiten; oben leuchtet der «Sonnen-Mond» und lässt es offen, ob der Tag anbricht oder die Nacht, rechts unten ist das mystische Tier zu sehen, das, wie die Blumen, ebenso für Inspiration steht. Selten dominieren die Blumen ein Gemälde wie im vorliegenden Fall. Trotz der Dominanz des Bouquets versteckt Chagall viele kleine Zitate aus seiner Lebensgeschichte
