During this difficult time he met Virginia McNeil and spent seven years with her and their son David, born in 1946. In 1948, at the Venice Biennale, Chagall was awarded a prize for his graphic work. He returned to France for good, settling first in Orgeval near Paris, later in Vence in the South of France.
