Auktion 277 : Marc Chagall - Forty Paintings 17.06.2022

When shortly afterwards Blaise Cendrars wrote to Chagall that the publisher Ambroise Vollard was planning to commission him to illustrate books, the family finally settled in their beloved Paris in 1923. There he created the 107 etchings for Nicolai Gogol’s Les Âmes Mortes, and later the illustrations for the Fables by Jean de la Fontaine. In 1931 Vollard commissioned him to illustrate the Bible. Between 1931 and 1937 Chagall travelled extensively, through Europe to Syria, Egypt and Palestine. In 1937 he was finally granted French citizenship after being refused twice before.
