Diese und die vorangehende Katalognummer entstanden als Illustrationen zu der Novelle "Die Fürstin" von Kasimir Edschmid, 1918 herausgegeben von Gustav Kiepenheuer in Weimar. Beckmann hatte den Autor 1916 bei den Battenbergs in Frankfurt kennen gelernt und danach verschiedentlich mit ihm zusammengearbeitet. In den beiden vorliegenden Kaltnadelarbeiten finden wir jeweils ein Selbstbildnis des Künstlers

This and the previous catalogue entry were designed as illustrations for the novella "The Duchess" by Kasimir Edschmid, published in 1918 by Gustav Kiepenheuer in Weimar. Beckmann met the author in 1916 at the Battenbergs in Frankfurt and co-operated with him on various occasions thereafter. Both of these prints contain a self-portrait of the artist
